Course Description
This course is a free and easy-to-navigate online learning experience for older Canadians and their caregivers containing best practices and advice for healthy aging. The first three modules examine aging well in place, the nutritional and dietary needs of older adults, and physical health and recreation for seniors. A fourth module addresses caregivers with tips and strategies for the eldercare process. This course was created with the support of the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program
Course Outline
Module 1: Planning and Navigating Care at Home
Designed for those planning to live in their own homes “as long as possible,” this module reviews common supports required for older adults; and important aspects of daily living like personal care, meal preparation, housekeeping, medication management, legal aspects, and driving.
Module 2: Nutrition and Healthy Aging
Nutritional health is an important aspect of quality of life for seniors. This module shares nutrition information and guidelines from reliable, evidence-based sources. The topics represent the most significant areas of general nutrition to consider and incorporate to gain optimal health and well-being for older adults.
Module 3: Recreation and Wellness
By building an understanding of how recreation positively impacts our well-being, this module helps participants reflect on their relationship to physical activity. It examines how our physical and mental health is impacted by different stages of life and surroundings, and how developing healthy habits such as regular recreational activity can support better health outcomes for older adults.
Module 4: The Caregiving Journey
The objective of this module is to take learners through the eldercare process in housing and care. Learners will be given tips, strategies, and information on various parts of the eldercare process including how to be productive in their own lives as they care for senior loved ones, care levels, and housing options.
