Course Description

The course is 16 learning hours. This accounts for all assignments and examinations. It does not take into account the total number of study hours.

This course focuses on the structural components of a residential dwelling including footings and foundations, floors, walls, and roof/ceiling structures. You will learn to recognize safety concerns and compliance issues that affect system performance.

Course Outline

Each week has required readings from the textbook. There are a total of five assignments and two examinations in this course.

  • Weeks 1-4: Footings and Foundation
  • Weeks 5-6: Floors
  • Week 7: Mid-term Examination
  • Weeks 7-9: Exterior Structures
  • Weeks 8-9: Wall Systems
  • Weeks 10-11: Roof Framing
  • Week 12: Final Examination

What You Will Learn

  • Inspect the types, materials, conditions, safety concerns, and other issues regarding foundations, floor structures, walls and other vertical support structures, and roof and ceiling structures
  • Identify the common problems that apply to each structural component named as well as the causes and implications of each problem
  • Describe the inspection procedures involved with each component
  • Define and use proper terminology related to residential structures

By enrolling in this course, you will be automatically enrolled in the Certificate in Home Inspection.
