Long gone are the days where dental hygienists “just cleaned teeth” in the dental office. As more research confirms that the health of your mouth can significantly impact your overall well-being through the interconnectedness of oral health and systemic health, Dental Hygienists play a critical role in promoting the complete oral health of patients.
According to a 2014 Canadian Respiratory Journal study, it is estimated that 5.4 million Canadian adults have been diagnosed with sleep apnea or are at high risk of experiencing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Additionally, it is estimated that 80% of Canadians living with sleep apnea are undiagnosed. If left untreated, sleep apnea can cause oral and other serious health problems such as high blood pressure, stroke, depression and diabetes.
Dental hygienists have a unique role as primary care providers in identifying oral manifestations of diseases and are optimally positioned to screen the oral cavity to identify unrecognized signs of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). It is essential that they communicate their findings to increase awareness of OSA, encourage treatment, and decrease adverse health effects to promote overall health and improve a patient’s quality of life.
This course will provide dental hygienists with an overview of OSA: the risk factors, symptoms, complications, diagnosis, and treatment options. Specific emphasis will be placed on how to screen patients for OSA through identifying clinical oral signs during an oral examination.

At the end of the course, attendees will be able to:
  • Explain sleep apnea, its risk factors and complication.
  • Discuss the symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea.
  • Describe and recognize the oral clinical signs of sleep apnea while performing an oral examination.
  • Assess a patient’s risk of having or developing obstructive sleep apnea.
  • Describe and explain diagnosis, treatment and management options for obstructive sleep apnea.

Patients have never been more excited and involved in their oral care. With increased aesthetic and time demands it is critical to be able to deliver care in a predictable, fast, and efficient manner. Treating patients digitally, provides real time feedback to both clinician and patient as well as provides simplified collaboration with colleagues and the laboratory. With todays modern digital impression systems and cloud based platform this has never been easier. This course will focus on integrating digital technology into your practice from simply taking digital impressions to producing high quality CAD/CAM restorations and splints to being able to tackle more complex implant or restorative cases. We will discuss the first ever cloud-native digital scanner from Dentsply Sirona and what that means for the future of patient care. For the hands-on section, we will explore new resins available for Primeprint to deliver high quality, comfortable splints for your patients. Following a demonstration, the hands-on component will give attendees the opportunity to scan with Primescan 2 and design their own splint using inLAB software.

At the end of the course, attendees will be able to:

Discuss the latest digital ecosystem from Dentsply Sirona and how it can provide comprehensive care to our patients.
