Assessment of the Industry
Through an introduction to the industry, you will begin to assess the bee industry in Atlantic Canada including honey production, hive splits and pollination. You will recognize the extent of the industry in the region including the economic importance of beekeeping.
Health and Safety
Within this topic area, you will become familiar with and recognize the operational safety, security and health regulations surrounding beekeeping. Personal protective equipment will be discussed along with how to deal with and avoid stings. Biosecurity protocols will be introduced and resources provided.
Application of Bee Biology
Do you need a better understanding of bee behaviour? By examining bee biology, you will be able to apply this knowledge to bee behaviour, colony organization and colony productivity. We will be taking an in-depth tour of bee life cycles, duties and seasonal sensitive behaviours and the implications for management including drone rearing, queen rearing and splitting.
Costs of Production
In this topic area, you will be exploring costs associated with bee production including equipment, start up and growth costs. You will also look at the ABC's of buying bees and acquiring equipment.
