Course Description

This two-day seminar focuses on core concepts of the 2015 National Building Code of Canada (NBC). A dedicated day of workshops will reinforce their application to a variety of Part 3 buildings.

The seminar has been developed based on interest in previous seminars on the NBC and sessions will involve individual and group participation in applying fundamental requirements of Part 3. There will be a structured workshop environment with constant interaction between attendees and seminar leaders. Workshop sessions will include application of Part 3 requirements from the 2015 NBC using provided project drawings.

Participants will learn about:

  • 2015 NBC structure and requirements
  • Core concepts of the 2015 NBC
  • Technical changes within Part 3 of the 2015 NBC and proposed changes for the 2020 NBC
  • Application of Part 3 requirements to a variety of major occupancies


Attendees are encouraged to have a working knowledge of the NBC Part 3.

Course Outline

Day 1 - registration/check-in will start at 8:00 a.m. with sessions to begin at 8:30 a.m. and adjourn at 4:00 p.m. Day 2 will commence at 8:30 a.m. and adjourn at 4:00 p.m. There will be 15 minute mid-morning and afternoon breaks. A light lunch is included from 12 noon to 1:00 pm.

Day Two  - Workshops / Case Studies  

Basic code reviews incorporating the Methodology for Conducting a Building Code Review. The workshops will develop skills in being able to classify a building under Subsection 3.2.2. and identify the major fire safety requirements. (Mid Rise Combustible Construction, Low-Rise Office, Low Rise Assembly Occupancies)


Sean Bartlett, P. Eng., is a Project Manager at RJ Bartlett Engineering Ltd in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Sean is a licensed Professional Engineer in New Brunswick and Saskatchewan. Sean graduated as a mechanical engineer in 2006 from the University of New Brunswick (UNB) and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in fire protection engineering at the University of Maryland.

Sean is an active committee member with the Fredericton Branch of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick.

Sean provides fire protection consulting and design services on all types of occupancies.

Ben Coles, M.Sc.E., MBA, P.Eng., PE, Fire Protection Engineer,  is a Project Coordinator at RJ Bartlett Engineering Ltd in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Ben is a licensed Professional Engineer in New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Maine. Ben graduated as a mechanical engineer in 2003 from the University of New Brunswick (UNB) and has since completed his M.Sc.E. in Fire Protection Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in 2009 and MBA in Engineering Management from UNB in 2011.

Ben has participated on a variety of committees with organizations such as the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick, and Association of Consulting Engineering Companies.

Ben provides fire protection consulting services on all types of occupancies.

One or more members of the RJ Bartlett Engineering Ltd team will lead the presentations and workshops.
