The Certificate in Incident Command is offered fully online. The first course in this two-course certificate program introduces research theory that attempts to explain how the size up is conducted through recognition-primed decision making. The second course introduces the more social and political aspects of incident command research and builds on the psychological aspects developed in the first course.

This certificate is for experienced incident commanders.
How Will You Benefit?
The courses for the Certificate in Incident Command review and explore incident command research and theory developed over the last 20 years and help participants to:
- Gain a better understanding of incident command and training for incident command; and
- Develop a professionalized fire service.
Certificate Requirements
The certificate consists of two courses over 72 hours. The two required courses are:
- OLCD-FIRE0029 Theoretical Foundations of Incident Command: Thinking
- OLCD-FIRE0028 Theoretical Foundations of Incident Command: Acting
Your first course should be OLCD-FIRE0029 Theoretical Foundations of Incident Command: Thinking.
Note: This certificate is for experienced incident commanders. You must email a brief description of your incident command experience for review by the program director before you will be enrolled in this certificate.
Fees and Schedule
See each course for the applicable tuition fee. Courses start in September, January and April. Each course is offered at least once a year. All courses are 12 weeks long and require a minimum of 36 hours of learning engagement each.
Note: Enrolling in OLCD-FIRE0029 will automatically enrol you in the Certificate in Incident Command. There is no obligation to complete the certificate.

Do you have prior learning or experience relevant to this certificate?
It may be possible to receive advanced standing in this certificate based on your prior learning from work or life experience. We provide two types of recognition of prior learning:
- Prior Certified Learning: Assessment of prior coursework or training through a provider, that is neither a university or college, for the purpose of advanced standing. Examples of certified learning may include military courses, accredited certificates, workplace training programs, etc.
- Prior Experiential Learning: Assessment of previous work and life learning that may be equivalent to learning outcomes of university courses / programs, for the purpose of advanced standing. Relevant prior learning may come from work or volunteer experience, participation on committees or boards, independent study, etc.
