Course Description
Open Credit: A new way to learn at Dalhousie University
Earn a university credit by taking a course that lets you study on a schedule that fits your life and save on the time and cost it takes to apply to a degree program. Receive an academic credit that may apply towards the requirements of your future degree program.
This course is designed to help students understand the nature of university learning and academic expectations. Students will learn how to build a solid foundation for academic success and increase self-awareness by exploring their learning styles, motivation and study habits. Topics will include time management, reading, note-taking, critical thinking, academic writing and preparing for exams.
Course Outline
This online course incorporates a multimodal approach to teaching and learning. Learners will participate in group discussions, activities, reflection. Content will be delivered via written text, videos and mini lectures.

- Introduction to University Learning
- Learning Styles
- Managing the Workload
- Listening, Reading and Note-Taking
- Critical Thinking
- Collaborative Learning
- Preparing for and Performing Well on Exams
- Managing Anxiety
- Research Skills
- Academic Writing
- Public Speaking and Presentation Skills
- Next Steps on the Academic Path
What You Will Learn
Upon successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:
- Manage the academic workload – prioritizing, making short and long-term plans for managing the workload, meeting deadlines, and avoiding procrastination
- Understand various learning styles and how to effectively learn from lectures and reading. This includes note-taking, condensing and remembering information
Notes
Upon completion of the course, students who would like to attend Dalhousie University can transfer this credit to apply to their degree program. Please note this course does not meet the elective requirements for the College of Arts and Sciences at Dalhousie and will not be applied towards their degree programs.
To transfer credit for this course, students will follow the instructions outlined by Dalhousie University to transfer credits for post-secondary applicants. More information about this process can found here on Dalhousie's website: Transfer Credits
Students will receive a Record of Completion after finishing the course.
Open Credit students are not full-time credit, so students and will have limited access to Dalhousie University resources. Open Credit students may not be able to utilize Dalhousie resources and supports mentioned throughout the course.
