Course Description

This course is 2 learning hours. Student can complete this course in one session, or at their own pace.


Chemical spills can occur in the laboratory or when transporting chemicals. In either situation, all personnel should be prepared to respond. Principal investigators, supervisors, staff, students, and any individual working with chemicals should be familiar with the chemical, physical, and toxicological properties of hazardous products in the laboratory or work area. Planning ahead and equipping the laboratory or work area with the required equipment will ensure a quick, safe, and effective response.

This course will cover responsibilities, prevention, spill kit contents, spill assessment, and spill response. It is important to note that additional site-specific training may also be required in order to address the specific chemicals in use.

There are a total of five modules that make up the Chemical Spill Response course:

  • Module 1: Responsibilities
  • Module 2: Prevention
  • Module 3: Spill Kit Contents
  • Module 4: Spill Assessment
  • Module 5: Spill Response
