Course Description

This course offers an in-depth exploration of the complex issues facing marine and coastal ecosystems today, drawing on the latest research and best practices from around the world. It introduces key policy and research frameworks essential for effective marine management, with a focus on integrated and spatial approaches that balance social, environmental, and economic factors in decision-making.

Created by the Marine Affairs Program (MAP), the course supports marine managers as they begin or advance their careers by providing accessible, relevant learning. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to address contemporary marine management challenges, contribute to policy development, and drive sustainable change within their organizations or communities.

As the field of marine management continues to evolve, MAP aims to help both mid-career professionals and emerging leaders update their skills. This course is intended as one of the core offerings that will count toward a Certificate in Marine Management.

Course Outline

Module 1: Setting up the Context
In this module, you will learn about issues of law and jurisdiction in the marine space, including the national (Canada) and international context 

  • Section 1: Introduction and Jurisdictions

Module 2: The Complexities of Marine Management
In this module, you'll be introduced to some of the social, technological, and ecological factors that make marine management complicated, but also how these lenses are essential for effective decision-making.  

  • Section 2: Indicators & scientific monitoring
  • Section 3: Human dimensions of marine management
  • Section 4: Risk assessment

Module 3: Tools for Making Decisions in Marine Management
In this module, you will discover some of the key tools used in marine planning & management, including:

  • Section 5: Sector-based planning
  • Section 6: Integrated management
  • Section 7: Marine Spatial Planning
