Course Description
This two-day course is designed for industry members interested in learning how to set up and operate a shellfish hatchery. Participants will gain both theoretical knowledge and practical experience through a combination of classroom lectures and laboratory sessions with hands-on training.
The course is delivered in two focused sections, covering the technical foundations of hatchery operations as well as oyster biology and production.
What You Will Learn
• The range of infrastructure used in shellfish hatcheries and nurseries, from remote and semi-exposed systems to fully controlled hatchery facilities• How infrastructure, environmental controls, and water treatment requirements change across life stages—from broodstock conditioning to spat production
• Key considerations for sourcing hatchery water, including risks, benefits, and common challenges that impact animal health and operations
• How to monitor, manage, and interpret water quality and filtration systems to support healthy larval and nursery environments
• Core oyster biology and life-cycle principles, including environmental tolerances and husbandry practices at each developmental stage
• Proven hatchery protocols for spawning, larval rearing, settlement, and movement of eyed larvae and spat
• Nursery and nutrition protocols, including FLUPSY and other nursery systems, phytoplankton culture, and stage-specific feeding strategies
