Particular emphasis will be placed on key anatomical sites within the oral cavity. The presentation will highlight underlying mechanisms including immune dysfunction, microbial interactions, and epithelial dysregulation, and their associated clinical manifestations. Diagnostic approaches and current management strategies will also be discussed, with a focus on identifying red flags for malignancy

At the end of the course, attendees will be able to:
  • Recognize the clinical and histopathological features of common mucosal inflammatory disorders in the oral cavity

Minimally Invasive Dentistry for Pediatric Patients - Lecture session (Lecture)

Minimally Invasive Dentistry (MID) focuses on preserving natural tooth structure while treating and preventing dental disease. Severe Early Childhood Caries (SECC) remains the most common chronic disease of childhood and requires a patient and family centred approach to care. MID encompasses early disease detection, caries risk assessment and dietary modification as well as techniques and materials that promote remineralization and caries arrest. This course will review preventative strategies including fluoride use, medicaments such as silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and topical remineralizing agents, techniques including the Hall technique and indirect pulp therapy. MID approaches to risk-based disease management are becoming more common in contemporary caries management. This course will offer information on MID with a hand-on component allowing practitioners to place stainless steel crowns using both the conventional and Hall techniques. Practitioners will also get hands-on experience with SDF application and pulpotomy treatment.

This section represents the Lecture part of the course and is a pre-requisite to the afternoon hands-on session.

You can choose to take it solely, without the hands-on session and so, by adding this section you would have registered for the Lecture only.

If you wish to take the hands-on, please scroll down and add DNTL-DENT0210-003 to your cart before checking out.

Lecture topics include:

  • Prevention/remineralization strategies for decalcification associated with fixed orthodontic appliances, Dr. Elizabeth Ross
  • Medical management of caries/IPT, Dr. Tracy Doyle
  • SDF/IPT, Dr. Jennifer MacLellan
  • Hall technique, Dr. Mohamed El Azrak

At the end of the course, attendees will be able to:
  • Apply principles of Minimally Invasive Dentistry (MID) to the prevention and management of Severe Early Childhood Caries (SECC), including caries risk assessment and patient- and family-centred treatment planning.
  • Evaluate and implement preventive and non-surgical caries management strategies, including fluoride therapies, silver diamine fluoride (SDF), topical remineralizing agents, and dietary modification.
  • Select and perform evidence-based MID treatment techniques for pediatric patients, including the Hall technique, indirect pulp therapy, and caries arrest approaches.
  • Demonstrate clinical proficiency in key pediatric restorative procedures, including stainless steel crown placement using both conventional and Hall techniques, SDF application, and pulpotomy treatment.
