This four-week program is an immersion experience that combines language classes and a robust sociocultural lineup. Improve your confidence and fluency in English, experience the unique city and culture of Halifax, and explore your academic pursuits through meetings with university advisors and campus visits.

Course Outline

The Daily Schedule

  • 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM Students will take the English Language Communication class focused on reading, writing, listening and speaking skills from Monday to Friday. 
  • 1:30 PM - 4:00 PM Students will take the English In Use class on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and will attend sociocultural activities on Tuesdays and Fridays. 
  • Evenings Time for parks, beaches, historic sites, summer festivals, events, shopping and nightlife 
  • Weekends Enjoy organized day trips to natural attractions, historic and cultural sites in different regions of Nova Scotia.
     

What You Will Learn

English Language Communication (Morning Class)

  • This class will focus on increasing your level of comfort and ability in regard to English in the classroom and outside of class. You will improve your confidence and fluency in English. Depending on your electives, you may be creating podcasts, conducting interviews, participating in lively group discussions or delivering business pitches.

English in Use (Afternoon Class)

  • Apply your language skills in real-life situations in the community with a focus on understanding Canadian culture.

Teaching in English (Afternoon Class for students from Tokoha University) 

  • Improve your ability to teach through the medium of English, as an experienced elementary, secondary or post-secondary teacher

 

Notes

A minimum proficiency level of B1 on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) is strongly recommended for enrollment in the Teaching in English course. No specific English language proficiency requirement applies to the English in Use course.

Following registration in the program, the online placement test, along with detailed instructions for its completion, will be provided via email.

Section Notes

Stay & Accommodation: Homestay

  • Students can move into their rooms as early as July 18 after 3:00 PM and need to move out on August 15 by 12:00 PM at the latest

Airport Transportation:

  • Arrival: Airport pick-up services will be provided on July 18 and July 19.
  • Departure: Airport drop-off services will be provided on August 15.

If a student travels on a date other than those listed above, they will be responsible for arranging their own accommodation for the additional nights as well as their airport transportation.
