Course Description
This course focuses on the exterior components including vegetation, grading, drainage, retaining walls, driveways, patios, walkways, decks, balconies, stoops, steps, porch railings, wall cladding, flashing, trim, eaves, soffits, fascia, exterior doors, and windows. You will learn to recognize safety concerns and compliance issues that affect system performance.
Course Outline
Each week has required readings from the textbook. There are a total of five assignments and two examinations in this course.
- Weeks 1-2: Architectural Styles
- Weeks 3-5: Exterior Cladding
- Week 6: Mid-term Examination
- Weeks 7-9: Exterior Structures
- Weeks 10-11: Surface Water Control and Landscaping
- Week 12: Final Examination

- Inspect the types, materials, conditions, safety concerns, and other issues regarding vegetation, grading, drainage, retaining walls, driveways, patios, walkways, decks, balconies, stoops, steps, porch railings, wall cladding, flashing, trim, eaves, soffits, fascia, exterior doors, and windows.
- Identify the common problems that apply to exterior components and the causes and implications of each problem
- Describe the inspection procedures involved with each component
- Define and use proper terminology related to the residential exterior

By enrolling in this course, you will be automatically enrolled in the Certificate in Home Inspection.
