Course Description
This course empowers you to master grammar and punctuation, giving you the confidence to express ideas with clarity and precision. Each week, you will engage in interactive online activities and practical writing exercises designed to strengthen your skills. You will participate in dynamic discussions with fellow learners through dedicated forums and benefit from two live virtual mentoring sessions, where you will connect with peers and receive expert guidance from the course instructor.
Course Outline
- Module 1: Understanding How Sentences Work
- Module 2: Combining Ideas using Punctuation
- Module 3: Avoiding Common Grammatical & Mechanical Errors
- Module 4: Editing Your Own Work
Weekly: Students will engage in a range of interactive online learning activities, including (i) participating in discussion forums, (ii) completing writing tasks to support virtual mentoring sessions, and (iii) attending two live mentoring sessions during the course. These live sessions, with the course instructor, will provide opportunities for clarification, feedback, and in-depth work on writing strategies.

- Describe the structural elements of a sentence and how they work together to create meaning
- Recognize and correct common “glitches” in sentences (issues involving grammar, punctuation, mechanics, and usage)
- Develop a process for effectively editing your own writing
Notes
This course is offered in collaboration with Smartfirm and is hosted on their Learning Management System (Moodle). While the course is primarily self-paced, it includes two mandatory live virtual mentoring sessions, scheduled on Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. AST via Teams (unless otherwise indicated by the instructor). As an instructor-led course, participants will have access to guidance and support from the instructor throughout their studies. All course requirements must be completed by the designated end date. Attendance at synchronous sessions is compulsory, and in the event of illness or other extenuating circumstances, participants are required to notify the instructor.
By enrolling in this course, you will be automatically enrolled in the Certificate in Technical Writing.
