Course Description
This interactive course is designed for practitioners who are currently utilizing minimal and moderate sedation services with their patients.
We will discuss the use of nitrous oxide & oxygen alone, oral sedation with benzodiazepines, and the use of nitrous oxide and oral benzodiazepines in combination. Provincial rules and regulations will also be covered, as well as best practices. Personal cases are welcome for discussion.

After the completion of this course, the participants will gain a refreshed understanding of:
- The pharmacology of nitrous oxide and benzodiazepines.
- Uses for minimal and moderate sedation in dentistry.
- The rules and regulations governing the use of sedation for dentistry in Nova Scotia.

Instructor: Dr. Peter Nkansah, DDS, MSc, Dip. Anaes.
Dr. Peter Nkansah received both his DDS degree and Diploma in Dental Anaesthesia from the University of Toronto. He is a specialist in Dental Anesthesia who maintains a private practice, Sleep For Dentistry, in Toronto. Additionally, he serves as an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto.
Dr. Nkansah is the Course Director for the conscious sedation continuing dental education course at Western University and for Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support courses at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. He is also a member of the editorial board for the dental journal Oral Health and regularly lectures for dental groups both nationally and internationally.
On the sports front, which is one of his other areas of interest, Dr. Nkansah is the team dentist for the Toronto FC of the MLS, the Raptors905 of the NBA G League, and the NBA’s Toronto Raptors.
Prerequisites
Participants must have completed a full certification course before enrolling in the recertification course. Recertification is not valid without an original certification.
Participants are responsible for verifying with their provincial regulatory bodies that the recertification meets the necessary certification requirements.
