Course Description

This course is 36 learning hours including the 9 hours of live sessions.  It is recommended that learners spend approximately 3 hours per week on this course.

 

Building upon the concepts learned in Theories, Models and Strategies of Career Development, Career Decision-Making will focus on the practical applications of theoretical knowledge and career development models.  We will discuss the assessment of personality, abilities, interests, transferable skills, values and employment barriers.  We will learn about career exploration, goal-setting, and decision-making strategies that result in individualized action plans, incorporating assessment data with occupational research and current labour market information.

  • Module 3:  The Path of CDM Exploration
  • Module 4:  Understanding Values, Needs, Interest and Personality in CDM
  • Module 5:  Putting it all Together!

What You Will Learn

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • define career decision-making (CDM) and "preferred futures"
  • examine your role as an employment specialist in CDM
  • explore which populations can benefit from CDM
  • discuss generational differences in CDM
  • examine our bias and how it may impact how we support clients
  • explore flexibility in supporting clients with CDM
  • learn how to use intake forms as a starting place for client engagement
  • discuss introductory questions that can clarify where to start with CDM
  • examine the importance of labour market information in CDM
  • explore the factors of needs, values, interests and personality in CDM
  • discuss the challenges that may develop during CDM
  • examine the influence of happenstance in CDM
  • discuss different ways to explore career and training paths
  • explore the use of SMART goals for CDM
  • build a career plan using the tools we have learned about
