Course Description

This course is 36 hours including the 9 hours of live sessions.  It is recommended that learners spend approximately 3 hours per week on the course.

 

This course focuses on the practical skills needed to support a client undertaking a job search. The course will focus on understanding Labour Market Information (LMI), resume and cover letter coaching, and interview/networking skills. Starting with understanding Labour Market Information we will look at local and global labour market trends to help forecast where employment needs will be in communities and what to expect for the future of work. Building on our understanding of the labour market we will practice the art of composing resumes and cover letters and learn how to coach clients on the basics of writing effective resumes and cover letters that get results. We will then learn about supporting the development of interview skills of our clients to help them improve and be more effective in presenting their skills and experience to meet the needs of the employer.

  • Module 4:  Costume Changes:  Tangible Tools, Resumes, Profiles and Beyond
  • Module 5:  Bring up the House Lights:  Illuminating Social Justice and Mental Health
  • Module 6:  Voice Lessons:  Careers Out Loud and Strategic Story-based Interviewing
  • Module 7: The Show Must Go On: First 100 Days, Job Maintenance and Career Ownership
  • Module 8:  Showtime: Peer Review of Major Projects
  • Module 9:  Curtain Call:  Connections, Next Steps & Implementation

What You Will Learn

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Outline the complexity of today’s employment landscape, from gig economies to future of work and beyond
  • Describe best practices for using online branding and social media in job searching
  • Explain a wide variety networking approaches, applicable with diverse clientele & contexts
  • Appraise resumes, cover letters, interview strategies and other job search tools to ensure they are effective, current and human & AI-friendly
  • Perceive emotional and mental health impacts of career searches, from job loss to bias and disclosure
  • State ethical, emotional and diversity, equity & inclusion (DEI) considerations that impact career searches
  •  
  • Deliver holistic, current and engaging job search strategies
  • Guide people to adopt realistic, proactive job search strategy & mindset based on both client context and occupational outlook
  • Distinguish legitimate, current resources and tools for career searching from unreliable sources , including effective sources of Labour Market Information
  • Value the guiding principles of delivering holistic, current and engaging career search strategies
  • Develop deeper respect for the rights of other people and how social justice impacts career development
  • Choose how to integrate knowledge and skill learning outcomes into your personal, unique approach to service delivery
