Course Description

Presented by the Atlantic Tech Transfer Team for Apiculture and Extended Learning, Working Bees & Hive Health is the second course in the Fundamentals of Beekeeping certificate. It is fully online and covers critical information on maintaining hive health, pest identification and management.

Topics covered:

  • Integrated Pest Management
  • Biosecurity
  • Pests and Diseases
  • Swarms and Splits

Course Outline

Over the span of five days, you will work through the above topics in an online environment. The course activities will give you an opportunity to engage with and learn from other students, the course instructors and industry guests. Course activities may include but are not limited to:

  • Assigned readings
  • Demonstration videos
  • Discussions
  • Synchronous (live) sessions with instructors and industry experts
  • Quizzes
  • In-person apiary sessions 

The course will consist of both synchronous and asynchronous learning. Scheduling of synchronous sessions will be communicated well in advance. Textbooks will be provided. There will be an in-person tour and learning session at an apiary located in Price Edward Island, on the Saturday. 

Notes

Participants will receive a Certificate of Completion upon successful completion of all 4 courses within the Fundamentals of Beekeeping program at 70% or higher.

Participants will also receive an additional Certificate of Participation for in-person attendance of the apiary tour.

Prerequisites

It is strongly recommended that you have successfully completed ELAG-BEES0010 - The Very Beeginnings prior to enrolling in ELAG-BEES0011 - Working Bees & Hive Health, or have equivalent experience. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please contact us at extended.learning@dal.ca.
