Course Description

A gardening skill-building retreat!

The Master Gardener Field School is a 5 day course that allows students the opportunity for hands on activities and to meet the instructor from the Master Gardener certificate program! For students who wish to become Atlantic Master Gardeners, this course is a requirement for the certificate. The 5 days are completed in-person, on campus, at the Faculty of Agriculture.

You do not have to be registered in the Master Gardener Certificate Program to participate in this field school. Anyone can register!

What You Will Learn

This field school encompasses a week of great learning activities for the classroom and outdoors and is open to anyone with an interest in expanding their gardening knowledge and skills.

Topics include:

  • Plant propagation
  • Planting techniques
  • Pruning
  • Garden maintenance
  • Pests and diseases
  • Troubleshooting plants and gardens
  • Fertilizing, liming, mulching and composting
  • Garden tool selection, use and maintenance

Notes

What to Bring: Rain gear, hat, sun screen, water bottle, safety boots/shoes, hand lens, pruning shears, work gloves and camera

Where to Stay:  Campus Residence - Participants can stay on the Agriculture Campus located in Truro, Nova Scotia. A block of rooms has been reserved for participants of the field school. To view the available rooms and book your stay, please visit stay.dal.ca/MG2025.bnb.

During Master Gardener Field School, the Annual Conference of the Atlantic Master Gardeners Association takes place. Students in the field school will join the conference on Thursday, May 29th. 

If students wish to attend the Atlantic Master Gardener Banquet Dinner on the evening of Thursday, May 29th, there is an option to add on a banquet dinner ticket for a $55.00 fee. This option will appear at checkout, when enrolling in the field school. 

Please note: The Master Gardener Field School includes various hands-on, physically-involved activities, as well as a moderate level of walking the campus grounds throughout the week. Please consider this if you have mobility concerns, and reach out to us with any questions. We are here to help make it work for everyone!

Anyone and everyone who has a passion for gardening is welcome to take this field school! Whether this is a new passion for you or you are looking to fine tune your skills, there is something for everyone throughout the 5 days.

This course is a requirement for participants in the Atlantic region who are currently enrolled in the Master Gardener Training Program.

Registration deadline is May 19th, 2025!  

Tuition is refunded if a course is cancelled by Extended Learning. Tuition is also refunded if the applicant notifies Extended.learning@dal.ca in writing prior to the registration deadline for the course or program
