Course Description
This English in Canada program is an English immersion experience that combines language classes with special university-level elective courses. We offer a range of different electives students can choose from as part of our program. Specialize in a certain area while improving students' confidence and fluency in English.
Course Outline
The Daily Schedule
- 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM Students will take English language classes (English Language Communication) focused on reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.
- 1:30 PM - 4:00 PM Students will take an elective course.
- Evenings Time for parks, beaches, historic sites, summer festivals, events, shopping and nightlife
- Weekends Enjoy organized day trips to natural attractions, historic and cultural sites in different regions of Nova Scotia.
What You Will Learn
English Language Communication Course (Morning Class)
- This class will focus on increasing your level of comfort and ability in regard to English in the classroom and outside of class. You will improve your confidence and fluency in English. Depending on your electives, you may be creating podcasts, conducting interviews, participating in lively group discussions or delivering business pitches.
Elective Course (Afternoon Class)
A variety of elective courses will be offered, dependent on enrollment.
- Business Communication - Improve the skills you will need for developing business ideas and relationships in an international context. The focus is on written and oral skills needed for business proposals and product pitches.
- Engineering and the Environment - Explore engineering principles applied to problems related to buildings, the natural environment, natural resources and technology.
- English for Specific Purposes - Explore discipline-specific contexts and materials to further develop communicative competence in your specific area of study or work.
- English in Use - Apply your language skills in real-life situations in the community with a focus on understanding Canadian culture.
- Introduction to Sustainability: Exploring the Ecological Footprint - Examine the environment and learn about reducing environmental impact. The course includes use of the Ecological Footprint tool, trips to a LEED-certified building, and in-class opportunities to create sustainable household products.
- Marine Biology - Explore Nova Scotian marine life and habitats through laboratory and field work. You will take trips to rocky shores, canal systems and a boat trip to observe whales and seals.
- Teaching in English - Improve your ability to teach through the medium of English, as an experienced elementary, secondary or post-secondary teacher
- Web Development - Learn key web concepts including website creation, hypertext markup languages, style sheets, client-side programming, and multimedia foundations. This class also introduces dynamic content management.
- Global Competence & Intercultural Communication - Practice effective intercultural communication, perspective taking, and critical thinking needed to thrive in diverse international settings. This course will give you an opportunity to foster global competencies by developing skills and strategies to take part in international activities.
- Occupation & Daily Life (2023 June session only) - This health care course is designed for students from various disciplines to learn about occupational science in health. In this course, you will explore a broader meaning of occupation at an introductory level, and how occupations are affected by both environmental and personal factors in health care, where the concept of environment includes aspects of geography, the built environment, policies, gender, the division of labour and other social forces.
Notes
A Common European Frame of Reference (CEFR) level of B1+ is highly recommended for the afternoon elective courses. For people at a lower level, you can still join the program and take the English in Use in the afternoon.
After you register in this program, we will arrange an online placement test for you to determine your level. We will email you with detailed instructions on how to complete the placement test. Once we received your placement test results, we will then contact you by email to confirm the afternoon elective course you are interested to take.
