Course Description
The Pediatric Injections Training Program (PITP) is comprised of two parts:
- Online Competency Program
- Administration of Pediatric Injections Workshop
This program was developed to prepare pharmacists to administer immunizations by injection to young children. The legislation surrounding this expanded scope of practice is in various stages in each province. You are required to check with your regulatory body for further instruction once you have completed this program.
Program overview
The Administration of Pediatric Injections Workshop, is training and certification on the hands on administration of injections. There is a virtual component and an in-person assessment where candidates must successfully demonstrate landmarking and intramuscular administration of medication into appropriate sites for different ages of pediatric patients.
Upon registration in the PITP, participants must register for a half-day in-person training session to complete the certification process. On the day of certification, participants will be provided with necessary supplies (i.e. needles, syringes, mannequins, etc.) and time to practice required skills. Trained certifiers from Dal CPE and Dal College of Nursing will provide guidance and answer questions regarding any aspect of the injection/immunization process.
There will be no formal review of the PITP online modules or PITP workshop content. It is anticipated that all participants will have reviewed pertinent materials from PITP, NACI, the Public Health Agency of Canada, etc., as determined by their own needs and/or by their provincial regulatory body, prior to attending the re-certification session.
